When Andrea came out of the bedroom a little before 8:15, Valerie thought her heart might stop. No one should look that breathtaking. She was dressed in a black bespoke suit with dark purple accents on the collar and buttons of the jacket. The silk blouse beneath the blazer matched all the accents perfectly. The long black woolen trench coat on top of it all somehow made her look taller than she actually was and accented the four-inch heels on her feet. “Wow,” she breathed as Andrea came closer. “You always look like perfection, but oh my God you look stunning.”

“Thank you,” Andrea said with a small smile. “Even if everything else goes to shit today, that look on your face was worth all this trouble.”

Val chuckled. “No one would dare mess with you while you look like that and I’m positive that was your goal.”

“You are correct.” Andrea moved to the counter and picked up the panic button with a frown. “When Bril gets here, I’ll have him fix this.” She put down the button and walked around to the kitchen drawers on the island. Valerie sat down on a barstool and propped her head up on her hand. She watched as Andrea rummaged around and then pulled out a phone box and some money. The money went in the breast pocket of her jacket, but she opened the phone and turned it on. “I’ll have Levi get you a phone like mine we can swap out every so often but you’ll be able to keep the same number unless there is an issue like the other day.”

Valerie nodded and gave her a little smile. “Thank you.”

“I was also thinking you should go to the doctor. Just to make sure everything is alright and figure out exactly how far along you are.” Andrea pulled out her own phone and scrolled through it before punching in the number on Val’s new phone. “There are vitamins you should take and tests they should run.” Valerie shifted uncomfortably. She hated doctors. She was long overdue for a follow up for her kyphosis too. It wasn’t a problem, she felt nothing wrong with the pins back there and the pain was minimal. Her old doctor was an asshole anyway and worked at the shitty state hospital. The only doctor she’d ever met that she liked was Allie. When she remained silent, Andrea glanced up at her. “What is it, love?”

“Maybe after the funeral, I can just go see Allie?” She hated how small her voice sounded.

Andrea clicked the phones off and carried one around the bar to put in front of Val. “I’m sure she would do the initial exam and tests, but she’s not an obstetrician. She knows a lot of doctors though. She can help pick the right one.” Andrea rubbed a hand up Val’s left arm and then straightened up the robe that was slipping down. There was a knock on the door and Andrea glanced at it and then back to Val.
